My guess is that I would use 2x8's for the rafter ties/ceiling joist, and also 2x8's for the rafters. There would be interior framing inside the addition, but there would be an area of about 15 x 16 that would be clear. The pitch of the roof would be about a 4 pitch. Edit: Thanks for the responses, Yes the ridge will be centered on the 16' span.

If the joist span is 18', the posts should be 6'6" apart. Of course I will be using fewer joists and carrying a lighter load so who knows how much more I can go - I was hoping someone might have that information. The guide further states that if I use 2x10 joists, I can span 17'3" and 2x8 joists can span 13'6".

If I did a middle post on the span, none of my patio furniture would fit, plus the wood on top would not be heavy or load bearing. My last pergola was 15 x 13 with no middle supports and that thing was sturdy. What about using I beams or turning the wood the other direction and span the 2x8 or 2x10 16 feet? Thanks Mitch

Generally speaking, a 2x8 should be able to span 8 feet, so if you double them, then an 8 foot span between the posts should be ok. The joists should be 16" on center. If you use 2x8s for the joists, you can make you deck 10' wide by having the joists over hang the beams by 2'.
